Round Two

Friday, March the Eighteenth, 2:15pm

A. G. Rigg v. Andrew Crabtree

Andrew Crabtree drew his second professor of the tournament for the second round, and had to face off against George Rigg. Taking an early 70-point lead with plays like hi/hi for 52 points, Andrew's cosmic performance seemed to have Prof. Rigg against the wall, but there was yet fight in the latter, who played hard, moved to even the score, and then rocketed ahead, with a lead of almost 100 points at the time he went out, which increased to 103 points with the adjustments, sending him to the next round.

Victor: Rigg
Score: 359 to 256

Winston Black v. Jonathan Newman

Jon Newman faced off valiantly, but ultimately unsuccessfully, against second-round opponent Winston Black in a game characterized by what both sides characterized as 'terrible tiles.' Despite their tiles, the game scored well, and Winston came out with a commanding lead at the end, which will see him advance to the semi-finals.

Victor: Black
Score: 268 to 224

Adam Bishop v. Rahel Kessler

The only two MA students in the tournament both made it to the second round, but there, one would have to lose, that the winner could use the body of his fallen classmate as a stepping-stone to the next round. Cheered on by fellow MA Jen Konieczny, Rachel Kessler fought hard, but was not to prevail against a visibly-delighted and victorious Bishop.

Victor: Bishop
Score: 248 to 202

Thursday, March the Thirty-First, 3:15pm

David Townsend v. Sean Winslow

Tournament organizer Sean Winslow narrowly lost to Professor David Townsend, he was frustrated by having no place to put his Scrabbles (bingoes), ultimately falling victim, in two word-challenges, to the Latin Professor's superior command of the language and its morphology.

Victor: Townsend
Score: 242 to 231
